“Young women are so much more than whether or not they have sex… we really should be teaching our daughters that their ability to be good people based on their intelligence, their compassion, their kindness- not what they do with their bodies.”
The Purity Myth is a film directed by Jessica Valenti in which she describes the concept of the “Virginity Movement”, the recent promotion of abstinence and ‘purity’. Valenti explores the effect this movement is having on our notions of gender stereotyping, primarily as a way of undermining women’s autonomy. You can watch the full movie here as a preview. Personally, I think it’s well worth watching or even just listening to if you can’t bear the ‘for preview only’ sign.
