Ryan Air: Not So Red Hot, Success!

A couple of months ago I wrote a short piece about Ryan Air’s sexist advertisements and pubilicity campaigns. A recent advert depicted women in their underwear alongside the brash slogan “Red hot fares and crew.” A Ryan Air flight attendant Ghada set up an online petition through Change.org in order to ban this advert and the misogynistic, damaging effects it perpetuated. And guess what? She was successful! The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) have announced that they have banned the advert after more than 11,000 people signed the petition.

The advert was sexism in it’s most potent form, disguised behind a ‘retro’ concept,  demeaning the professional women and their hard work on the flights. Change.org emailed me this statement today,

“The victory is an extraordinary example of people power — and a testament to the power of anyone, anywhere to start, join and win campaigns about issues they care about.”

Couldn’t have put it better myself. One person, or 11,000, really can make a difference.
